summer sermon series

Our summer sermon series is on the Psalms of Ascent. This is section of 15 Psalms (120-134) that each come with an inscription saying “A Psalm of Ascent” Most scholars believe these were psalms for Temple pilgrimages, where you would sing them on the way to Jerusalem or as you walked up the steps to the Temple. So, in a way, these are both songs for a journey AND prayers for approaching God. Eugene Peterson refers to this section as a “dog-eared songbook” that God’s people have used for generations and still are perfect for us to sing today because “there are no better songs for the road for those who travel the way of Christ.” May we all grow closer to Him this summer.

If you would like to delve even deeper into this series, I’d recommend these resources:

  • Derek Kidner’s Commentary on Psalms 73-150 – Kidner was one of my favorite Old Testament scholars but this commentary isn’t overly technical or academic but actually very readable!
  • A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society by Eugene Peterson. This book, which I quoted earlier is a classic on discipleship and Christian formation. It actually lines up really well with the Discipleship series we’re finishing as it walks through different aspects or characteristics of discipleship but Peterson uses the Psalms of Ascent as his guide through most of the book which I think will help in applying the Psalms to our personal lives each week.

bridge of hope "unaffordable rent" program

In today’s tight housing market, affordable homes and apartments are extremely scarce for lower income families. A recent study showed that only 37 affordable homes are available for every 100 low-income renters. Even the number of days it takes to find suitable housing for families has increased, more than doubling over last year alone. With your help, Bridge of Hope is finding housing opportunities for more families facing homelessness this year—despite a market that’s pricing many of them out. Your support will make this happen!

Ariana* and her two young children were moving between homes of family and friends and occasionally living out of a car. She had searched for an affordable apartment for months, with no success, despite stable employment as a care assistant at a nursing home. After joining Bridge of Hope Ariana saw a listing for a two-bedroom apartment and applied—along with 70 other people. Her participation in Bridge of Hope and resolve to end homelessness swayed the landlord, who gave her the lease—and transformed her family’s future.

Your gift toward the goal of $150,000 by September 22 will help more families into homes and stabilize more lives through new programs and expanded services for parents and children facing homelessness.

Your gift this summer will help end family homelessness. Ariana’s story isn’t unique. Your support can help more than 150 Ariana's find housing this coming year. To learn more or give online: https://bridgeofhopeinc.org/give/unaffordable-rent/

Thank you for the HOPE you make possible for Ariana and other moms like her .
